Title: Plans Hatched Behind Bars

Wordcount: 1086

Spoilers through: Stormblood

Alternate Universe: To Catch a Falling Star

Relationships & Characters: Fordola/Lyse, Conrad

Summary: A lucky chance affords Lyse and Conrad another opening to escape - at the cost of Fordola’s life. Lyse comes up with a different idea instead.

(Been wanting to write this scene for a while, and this seemed like the right prompt for it! This takes place after my entry for prompt #12, and basically sets up the plot for the rest of the AU.)

“Pretty neat, huh?” After unlocking Conrad’s cell, Lyse returned to her own, and nodded to the blissfully dreaming imperial commander within. Fordola had made the mistake of letting her guard down around Lyse, and this was the prompt result. “Doesn’t seem she’ll be waking up any time soon, so we’ve got time to plan our escape!”

The grizzled old apothecary frowned and knelt down to examine Lyse’s handiwork. “Aye, you can say that again. She won’t be waking up at all, after this.”

“What?!” Lyse’s eyes widened. “But she can’t be dead! I didn’t hit her that hard!”

“Oh, it’s none of your doing, lass. It’s the poison what’ll do her in.” Conrad shifted to the side, allowing Lyse to take a closer look. “I’ve seen cases like this before. Folks poking around Bittermill, and they hit something rancid buried in the soil. Everything inside them slows down, and soon enough, even the heart stops.”

And indeed, on further inspection, Lyse could make out the sheen of sweat on the imperial’s brow and the pained rasp of her irregular breathing. “Bittermill… that’s where the Skulls were fighting…” From the conversation Lyse had overheard, one of their thaumaturge’s blasts had exposed a rusty canister in the ground that had quickly poisoned the air.

Unlike most high-ranking Garlean troops, Fordola lacked the intimidating gas-filtering mask. And she was the type of commander who fought right in the thick of battle alongside her men, too.

No wonder Lyse had been able to get the jump on her.

”She swallowed the poison the Garleans fed her, and now she’s dying of it,” Conrad said mournfully.

“I mean, from the sound of it, it was an accident.” 

Conrad sighed. “Sometimes, Lyse, it’s not about the little details, but the big ones.” He gave her an admonishing look that was an awful lot like one of Papalymo’s.  “About the story folks will tell after we’re gone. The story of what was once Ala Mhigo.”

That was all well and good, but Lyse had more important things to think about than giving up. “So… what do we do with her?”

Conrad thoughtfully gazed at the ceiling above. “You said the patrol upstairs passes every bell, wasn’t it?”

“Right.”

“Then we’ve another half bell to wait.” He settled back against the bars of the cell. “May as well stay at her side, I suppose. No Ala Mhigan deserves to die alone in the dark. Not even the Butcher.”

“Argh! This is ridiculous!” Lyse whispered furiously. Over the course of the half bell, she had gone from sitting, to restlessly exercising, to now gesticulating wildly as she paced around the cell.

Lyse had never been an especially patient person. Her muscles constantly ached to fight, to run, to do. Waiting quietly in the dark while watching as some helpless woman’s breathing grew slower and slower was pure agony!

“This isn’t what fighting for the revolution is supposed to be like! Ala Mhigans killing Ala Mhigans! Ala Mhigans just - just sitting around watching each other die!”

“I know, Lyse.” Conrad said softly. He had looked up from monitoring Fordola at Lyse’s outburst. “But there’s naught we can do.”

“Of course there is! There’s always something we can do!” Lyse clenched her fists. “There’s got to be - oh, I don’t know what it is exactly, but it looked like an infirmary upstairs. If we took her there now, they might be able to save her!”

“And then what?” Conrad’s voice was unusually harsh. Perhaps his silent vigil had been weighing on him too. “Give up our one chance of escape? For sake of the Butcher?” He frowned deeply. “No. The Resistance may be finished, but I’ll not simply roll over and let the imperials kill me in one of their godsforsaken camps.”

“You’re right…” Lyse’s face fell. “It wouldn’t be fair to you. You don’t have to come.” She looked down, let her hands sheepishly relax back to her sides. “You can escape, and I’ll take her as far as the infirmary and leave her there.”

“And what were you planning to do after, lass? I keep telling you. You’ve got to think things through.”

“I was getting there!” Lyse bit her lip. There was a plan forming in her mind, a good one, but how to put it into words?  “After that… I’ll come back here.”

“No. I’m not leaving you behind.” Conrad rose to his feet and beckoned her to the cell door. “I owe Curtis at least that.”

“That’s the whole problem!” Lyse suddenly burst out. “Stop it! Stop making everything about my father and my sister! I’m not them, and I don’t deserve what they deserved! You heard what happened in Ala Gannha. I barely understand the first thing about Ala Mhigo!”

“Lyse - “

“You said that Garlemald stole Ala Mhigo’s future by taking their youths. Well, then why aren’t we working to steal them back?” Lyse was back to making wild gestures. “The Resistance is finished without more Ala Mhigans?” She stabbed a finger back towards Fordola. “There’s your Ala Mhigan!”

“This isn’t a game, Lyse.” But Conrad cracked a tiny smile at her impassioned rant.

“I’m being serious! Look.” Lyse crossed her arms. “Nothing we’ve tried before has worked either, right? And - and Fordola seems to have some kind of a soft spot for me! So this is something only I can do.”

Not my father. Not my sister. Me. 

“It’s too risky.”

“I’ll have a back up plan!” Lyse countered, holding up and waving the keys she’d snagged from Fordola’s belt. “Hard to keep me behind bars when I’ve got these.”

Conrad let out a dry chuckle. “Well then. It’s nothing like what your sister would have done, that’s for sure.” He glanced down, shaking his head at the still form of the dying commander. “And to tell the truth… it’s what I want too, sentimental old fool that I am.”

“Then… you think I should give it a try?” Lyse’s expression brightened.

“Aye. There’s many in the Resistance what might’ve disagreed… but they’re gone now, same as the rest. So if your mind’s made up and you’ve got the courage for it, you’ve my full support.”

“I’ll get you an army again! You’ll see!”

“Right then, Hext. That’s your mission: come back with the Skulls. I’ll be waiting for you.”

Lyse threw an eager salute and watched as Conrad disappeared up the castrum stairs and into the night beyond.

It was the last time anyone saw Conrad Kemp alive.

After a walk around to see the various work on going, seeing Inga hard at work in the infirmary, we met back up with Alphinaud and Alisaie checking out the trade and supplies. It would be good to know what was lacking in case we could help them source a new avenue while we were here.

After a short while M'naago came to find us again to deliver the outcome.

Thank you all for waiting. We have reached a consensus. I, Conrad Kemp, do hereby accept the Eorzean Alliance's proposal. You must understand, however, that our cooperation comes with certain caveats.

Those caveats being...?

I take no joy in this, just so you know. Were it within my power, I'd offer you more assistance. But the Resistance is far more fragmented than you realize. The men and women in my care belong to but one of many factions.

Simply put, I can only speak for the people of Rhalgr's Reach. Now, I have every intention of appealing to the others, and I expect many will agree─but it will take time, and I cannot guarantee universal support.

Understood. I shall see that the Alliance is under no misapprehensions as to your position.

Much obliged...but that's not the whole of it. As you can imagine, the loss of those who cast their lot with the Griffin left us short on numbers. Some of our most trusted veterans died at the Wall, and we've had to fill their posts with the young and inexperienced. Frankly, everything's in a right bloody mess.

Oh, we'd be more than happy to help you get back on your feet. If we're going to work together, we'll be doing ourselves a favor!

Well, there's no shortage of work to be done, that's for sure. We're in dire need of new blood too.

Y'shtola and I could lend a hand in the infirmary. From what I saw, they could do with a few more healers.

Very well. I, for my part, shall return to the Rising Stones. I am certain there are others among the Scions who would welcome the opportunity to fight for Ala Mhigan liberation.

Um... Is there anything else we can do to help?

Day 6 - Halcyon

[Spoilers for ARR, Stormblood and Heavensward]

“What was it like, before the occupation?”

In that moment, Conrad Kemp couldn't keep the surprise from flickering over his face, turning to look at the Ala Mhigo native turned refugee and stare for a long, hard moment. Brynhorn Fiske sat unmoving, gazing out over Rhalgr's Reach with a critical silver eye from their perch atop the outstretched hand of Rhalgr himself. Gentle wind, blocked by the high walls on all sides, gently breezed through the white hair of the older man, and the longer black, more unkempt hair of the younger man, tugged at their coats, and brought a slow realization to the leader of the Ala Mhigan Resistance leader.

“Ah, you only knew the Garlean occupation.” Bryn nodded, shifting the rifle laid over his lap, and a look of soft sadness passed over his eyes. “Yes, and no. They invaded when I was ten. And I fled for my life at thirteen to avoid conscription. But my life before that…” He didn’t want to get into it, what he had seen, how he, so young, was forced to see the darker side of human nature. How even without the Garlean invasion, he would have fled anyways.

“You knew it right as you became a man,” was all Conrad said in reply, and Bryn nodded in agreement. For a long moment, they were both silent, and then Conrad spoke in a quiet voice. “It would be inaccurate of me to say peace existed with the King of Ruin on the throne, but the time before him…” He trailed off, and he smiled, eyes wistful as he tilted his head up into the air. “Halcyonic. My wife and I were together, we were happy, we had not a care in the world but healing, learning, growing. It was all incredibly peaceful.”

Bryn nodded softly, closing his eyes as he tried to imagine a time when the King of Ruin was not in control. When the Garleans were not using his village as a staging ground. When he might have had a normal life. He took a deep breath of the cool air, and let it out slowly, sighing as he shook his head. “I can only imagine.”

“Maybe you won’t have to,” Conrad said softly, motioning to the Warrior of Light beneath them, to the small contingent of Eorzean Grand Company members milling about, providing aid or training to the resistance. “For once, Eorzea is taking interest in our plight, the city states are sending aid. They took the wall-”

“-and paid dearly for it,” Bryn’s voice had more bite than he meant, and he saw Conrad’s face fall, the pain evident in his expression.

“Aye, that we did. Papalymo was as much a friend of mine as he was to you and yours.” Bryn was silent in the wake of that admission, and it was many, many seconds before he broke the silence.

“There was a time I was ready to turn my back on my home, to forget I ever hailed from here, to stay in Eorzea and see where it took me. But seeing this…” He gestured to the resistance, and shook his head. “This reminded me there is something worth fighting for here.”

Conrad nodded, in understanding, his eyes softening. “Thank you for agreeing to fight with us.”

Bryn rose, and shouldered his rifle, glancing at Conrad as he grunted in reply, “Thank me after we finish this fight.” And he strode towards the winding path that led back down to Rhalgr’s Reach and his waiting friends, new and old.

Hello, My Lovely Spring Rolls!

To celebrate such milestones in my personal (birthday! woot woot!) and tumblr (500 followers!) life, I will be hosting my first-ever (and hopefully the beginning of more) sleepover for all of us to enjoy!

I've only been actively posting my stories on this site since October 2022 and truthfully, you guys have been such a blast and I cannot thank you enough for the support and love you continuously give.

With that being said, I hope you would join me in this sleepover and make more memories together!

For this sleepover, we will be having 2 events; 1) Writing Challenge, and 2) Fic Requests.

🌻This challenge is only open to 18+. Minors, please DNI.

🌻The theme for this challenge is, you guessed it, SPRING! Not only is it on my tumblr name but it's my favorite season of all time. I know we are still far away from it but oh well.

🌻The sleepover will start on January 31st and end on March 31st (though my birthday is on the 7th of March huehue) No late submissions, please.

🌻This challenge is open to all genres BUT (and it's a big one) if you've been hanging around me for a while, you know what my preferences are—angst, smut, and dark.

🌻All tropes are allowed—Mafia, A/B/O, enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies, even step-cest if that's your vibe.

4.0 stormblood pvp my beloved oh how i missed you. its interesting which items ended up being marketboard valuable and which werent. some items are very hard to get on the free trial but worthless on the marketboard. i pvp for the glamour and it took me 10 minutes to find where in the menu the actions were.

hmmm 3 plot threads: doma, ala mhigo, shinryu. i have a feeling like in 2.x ffxiv will be progressing all 3 at once, it would be interesting if they used the parallel narratives of doma and alamhigo to say something but i don't trust the writers.

not even out of rhalgar's reach and the game has crashed 6 times

if the ala mhigan resistance is so fractured no wonder illberd was successful if he could unite the factions. could take a leaf out of his book and do the same proping raubahn up as a figurehead to unite ala mhigo under.

attack on rhaelgar's reach: hooboy you can see how ffxiv was actually making money at this point so the dev team had an actual budget for like voice acting and fight choreography and animation. tsk cowards should have killed someone to drive home how zenos is a threat. kemp would have been the cliche choice so that the Resistance has to scrambled leaderless and even more disorganized. it would also give Lyse a chance to step up and unite Ala Mhigo as part of her character arc about struggling with diaspora identity. Y'shtola would be the other choice as the scions sacrifice yet another member and Lyse is faced with how her path is killing her friends. a concept i like is that all the scions eventually die so by the end there's no one you started out standing with yo but the devs are too cowardly to do so. like ship of Theseus scions as a friend group scions as a concept. (like when you first meet the scions alphinaud isn't a part of them yet). 3rd dude would also be cliche but i'd feel the worst about his death, brought back just to die is a terribly trope.

zenos sounds so incredibly bored i love the voice acting. that sword sheath is ridiculous why is it so big

i thought rhaelgar's reach was considered safe because garlemald didn't know where it was, and now that it is no longer hidden is it safe to stay here? oh lol they did kill meffrid aka the worst option. put on a bus since like level 20 msq and brought back just to die. waste of a character and his death is the least impactful of the 3. i just feel bad for him. because the last time the player sees him he's so angry and distraught and the player character is this last thread of hope and then you come and here see that he's found something meaningful to do

i've liked the soundtrack so far but its softer than i imagined. like there's a lot of lone soft piano.

sunk cost fallacy, but i don't want the old man to give up either. I feel for conrad.

this actually isn't a bad plan, i think i proposed something like this way back when i played 2.0

sidequesting! bioweapon black rose was developed and tested in gry albania using captured ala mhigans. comet's tail used to be a rhalgar holy site and the garleans used it for weapon testing. ala mhigan architecture traditionally uses stone and that made quarrying big especially when it was for royal palaces but garleans built using only metal.

I will say as a pipin enjoyer stormblood has been great with the pipin screen time

i have the unfounded yet strong suspicion that the writers who created yda in 1.0 are different from the people who wrote stormblood. they wanted a new character without having to introduce a new character. thus: lyse impersonating her sister. minfilia and lyse since they're both highlanders that inherited midlander models from 1.0 and they are like the only ala mhigans with very light skin, blue eyes and blond hair. like if it was just one i'd take that as a statistical improbability, but both of the major ala mhigan scion characters??? but them not looking like highlanders much is the same as cid being short in that in 1.0 midlanders were the only hyur model they had. its not going to happen but i dream of them revamping the models in 7.0 to be more like the other highlanders.

one thing i do like that arr (and maybe 1.0 idk didn't play it) sets up and then i see again here in stormblood is a theme of multiculturalism in the eorzean alliance vs the hegemony imperialism of the garleans. like the only way to gain respect in the empire in to act and be garlean so give up your original culture and try (and fail) to be as garlean as possible vs. the resistance is like hell yeah the snake ladies are great. there content in 2.0 that shows eorzeans can be just a racist as the garleans, but its hard to tell if it was done deliberately, if so actually that'd be a pretty good take. and there are aspects of this in the sidequests like where you help reunite the qiqin brothers or how they talk about how the ones outside uldah used to be regular merchants but the anti beastmen laws took away their livelihoodthe problem as with ffxiv as a whole is that its 50 (idk the real number) some writers all doing their own thing and they dont coordinate so while one group of writers are depicting the racism beast tribes face in eorzea, another group or writers is going haha look at these moral-less subhumans.so its not so much growth so much as the natural cycle of a old mmo where the writers are cycled out and we just so happened to get the anti racism ones as the msq writers where as before they were side quest writers.
